Fields and limits
These are the limits Apple states in App Store Connect's platform version reference.
| Field | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | 2 to 30 characters | The same 30 character cap appears in the App Review Guidelines. |
| Subtitle | 30 characters | Shown under the name. |
| Promotional text | 170 characters | Can be changed at any time without submitting a new version. |
| Keywords | 100 characters | Comma separated. Apple's reference describes the limit in bytes, so check the live field if you use non-ASCII text. |
| Description | 4,000 characters | Plain text. HTML is not supported. |
Name and subtitle
The name is how people recognize the app, so keep it a name. The subtitle is the short line under it. This is practical advice, not an Apple rule: use the subtitle to say what the app helps with, in words a person would use.
Promotional text
Because promotional text can change without a new version, it suits timely messages such as what is new or a current focus. Keep it truthful and short.
Keywords
The keyword field is not shown to people. Use it for relevant terms that are not already clear from the name and subtitle. As a common practice rather than an Apple rule, avoid repeating words you have already used elsewhere, and read the metadata rules in the App Review Guidelines before you submit.
Description
The description is plain text. Explain what the app does, who it is for and what is included, in the order a new person would ask. Keep claims accurate to the version you are submitting.
- Put the most important sentence first, since the top of the text is what people see before expanding.
- Use short paragraphs and line breaks instead of formatting, because HTML is not supported.
- Do not claim rankings, awards or user numbers you cannot show.
Before you submit
- Name is between 2 and 30 characters.
- Subtitle is 30 characters or fewer.
- Promotional text is 170 characters or fewer.
- Keywords fit the 100 character or byte limit in the live field.
- Description is accurate, plain text and under 4,000 characters.
